Choir Club

Orientation
I was a normal little boy who didn’t really like to sing. Ever since I was in 1st grade, I actually hated singing because I always got mocked for my bad singing skills. I joined the choir club when I was in 7th grade, after I entered Santa Maria Junior High School. I didn’t join because I loved singing, I joined because every Catholic student had to. I thought it was going to be boring because I didn’t like singing, and none of my friends joined the club either.
Events
On the first day, it was boring for me. All we did was sing, sing, and sing again. It felt so lackluster. As days went by, the club only got more boring. If we weren’t singing, we were being tested, sometimes individually, which made it even worse and made me even lazier because I’m an introvert. But in the middle of the semester 1, I was surprised to hear that we had to sing at a church, specifically at Salib Suci Church, located on Kemuning Road number 25. I was pretty nervous, even though I had sung in church once in 6th grade at Saint Odilia Church.
I managed to sing at Salib Suci Church, even though it wasn’t very good, but I was proud of myself because I tried my best. After singing, everyone including me got a little snack. Even though it was simple, it made me more enthusiastic for future singing tasks. In 8th grade, I became more fired up (but still nervous) because one of my friends joined the choir club, and there was an upcoming choir competition at UPI (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia), which was the first competition of my life that made me very nervous. After our performance, I had to leave early with my parents because I suddenly felt sick.
We ended up in the top 7, but that was okay, it meant we had tried our best. After that loss, we trained harder as time went on. When I was in 9th grade, there was another competition for Coconut Day, held at Kodim 0618. We trained hard every week and even made Mr. Davin mad once because our voices were too soft. Then competition day came. We waited patiently for our turn, but I was extremely nervous since it was only my second competition. We sang with all our might but i had to leave the competition early because my parents already waiting for me outside. We ended up winning 2nd place. It felt great, though a little disappointing because we knew we could have done better.
Reorientation
Although I hated singing in first grade, joining the choir club changed my life. I learned many valuable lessons from choir, including self-confidence, perseverance, and the courage to try new things. What started as a regretful decision became one of the best I’ve ever made. I made many friends, gained new experiences, and had the chance to serve the church through the choir. I hope that, after I graduate from Santa Maria Junior High School, the choir club will improve.
